During my time in Stockholm, I devoted a day to wondering around Gamla Stan, the city’s old town and taking in the views. Gamla Stan is a beautiful area, but one building I was particularly taken with was Riddarholmen Church.
Separated from Gamla Stan by a narrow strip of water, the church is situated on Riddarholmen island. The church is one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm and is the final resting place of Sweden’s former monarchs (though members of the Royal Family are now buried elsewhere).
One of my favourite features of the building is the hollow iron spire, built to replace an earlier spire which was destroyed by lightning. The church also has several chambers off the main building, one of which is white in contrast to the red brick exterior – these distinctive features made the church really stand out to me.
I don’t tend to enter churches (I’ve been put off after wandering into Orthodox services in Russian churches and feeling guilty from my lack of faith), so I simply admired the building from the outside, but I think you can agree it is a beautiful church.
Have any churches or buildings really stood out for you on your travels?

I was really taken with Sainte Chapelle church when I lived in Paris http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sainte-Chapelle. Compared to most other grand medieval cathedrals in France (and across Europe), SCh is so delicate, intimate and its interior is downright whimsical.
Wow – that interior looks incredible!
